Peering Through the Mist: Ancient Wisdom in an AI-Driven World

In an era saturated with self-help gurus, productivity hacks, and the endless scroll of digital information, a curious trend is emerging amidst the bustling metropolises of China. While many might instinctively turn to advanced AI chatbots for answers to life's perplexing questions, a growing number of young people are seeking guidance from practices that predate modern technology by centuries. As China's economic landscape presents new uncertainties, these individuals are finding solace and insight in the spiritual traditions of their ancestors.

Fortune-telling bars, a fascinating blend of ancient mysticism and contemporary socialising, are now dotting urban centres. These establishments offer patrons the chance to unwind with a drink and a snack while consulting practitioners of xuanxue, a term encompassing various forms of spiritualism. This burgeoning "spiritual economy" makes particular sense in the current climate: it offers an affordable alternative to traditional therapy or other forms of retail indulgence while tapping into a deep-seated cultural reverence for Daoist, Buddhist, and folk practices that have endured despite decades of governmental efforts to suppress superstitious beliefs.

Shaking for Answers: A Modern Dilemma, Ancient Ritual

Curiosity piqued by this intriguing phenomenon, this author recently visited a newly opened establishment in Beijing's affluent Chaoyang district. The bar, adorned with traditional yellow talismans and flowing translucent curtains, provided a serene backdrop for an encounter with a fortune-teller specialising in

Qiuqian, or Chinese lottery sticks. This ancient practice, dating back to the Jin dynasty (AD 266 to AD 420), involves shaking a cylindrical container until a single, inscribed wooden stick falls out. The fortune-teller then interprets the message, which has historically guided individuals through war, upheaval, and cultural shifts, and now, the advent of artificial intelligence.

The pressing question on many minds, including this author's, is the impact of AI on employment. With a focused mind and a firm grip on the qiuqian container, the sticks revealed a sobering outlook. The interpretation suggested that while one's talents are undeniable, the sheer scale of AI's capabilities – for example, generating ten articles for every one a human writes – will undoubtedly lead to an impact on one's profession. Furthermore, a second stick even hinted at a timeline: no major impact within one to three years, but after that, AI is predicted to become a significant force.

Beyond the Sticks: Personal Adjustments and Lingering Questions

Undeterred, though perhaps slightly disheartened, another question was posed to the insightful practitioner: would a pay rise be on the horizon? The response, swift and direct, indicated limited immediate possibility. While hinting at a "transition" and "some hope", it also emphasised the need for "personal adjustments".

When pressed for clarification on these "personal adjustments", the fortune-teller offered a blend of spiritual and practical advice. She suggested that

Xuanxue could offer "support", pointing to a bracelet made of natural materials designed to attract wealth as an example. However, she underscored that ultimately, "the most important thing is still communicating with the superiors".

This journey into ancient divination in a modern setting revealed a universal human desire to understand and navigate an uncertain future. Whether the anxieties stem from economic shifts, technological advancements like AI, or personal aspirations, the quest for insight remains timeless. As the evening drew to a close, it became clear that while ancient practices can offer perspective and perhaps a sense of comfort, the path forward often requires a blend of spiritual guidance, personal effort, and proactive engagement with the evolving world around us.
