Apple's Ambitious Plan to Bridge the Generative AI Gap: A $1 Billion Annual Investment

In response to the rapid advancement of generative AI, Apple has unveiled an ambitious strategy to allocate $1 billion annually towards developing its generative AI products, as reported by Bloomberg.

According to a recent report from Sunday, the rationale behind this substantial investment is Apple's desire to catch up with industry leaders like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, all of which have already introduced cutting-edge AI products and features.

Apple has yet to release a generative AI product akin to OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google's Bard. While AI is utilized in some of Apple's offerings, its primary function has been to enhance image quality and automatically correct text.

According to Bloomberg's findings, Apple has already engineered its extensive language model system known as "Ajax," as well as an in-house chatbot, which is rumoured to be "Apple GPT." However, these assets have yet to be integrated into Apple's product portfolio thus far.

Reports indicate that Apple's vision includes incorporating AI into prominent services such as Siri, Messages, and Apple Music. For instance, Apple aims to employ AI to automatically curate playlists in Apple Music, mirroring Spotify's collaboration with OpenAI. Furthermore, the company is exploring ways to leverage AI within Xcode to assist app developers in their work.

Bloomberg's report identifies key figures overseeing Apple's AI initiatives, including John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy; Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering; and Eddy Cue, the head of Apple's services division.
