Bill Gates is the largest owner of farmland in the United States
"Hell yeah. I have issues," says White Oak Pastures, a 152-year-old Bluffton, Georgia farm run by six generations.
Will Harris, the owner of White Oak Pastures, was worried about Bill Gates' secretive land purchases and investments in plant protein that he was making to fight climate change.
Harris is the owner of White Oak Pastures, a 152-year-old family farm in Bluffton, Georgia, that has been in his family for six generations. In a recent Facebook post, he talked about his worries.
"Yes, I'm worried that Gates will take over farmland. I don't want a person who hurts children to be in charge of even one child, and I don't want him to be in charge of even one acre "Harris typed.
"First, land is valuable," says the post. "It could be more valuable than anything else. I don't like it when someone who doesn't know what to do with it is put in charge of it. How good do you think I would be at running a tech company or a bank? It makes as much sense as giving someone like Bill Gates control over something as complicated as an ecosystem. He doesn't know how to take care of it well."
"Second, everything has been kept way too secret," the post says. "An article from May 4, 2021, said that Gates had bought more than 200,000 acres of land in 18 states. Georgia wasn't on the list of 18 states, but a friend of mine had sold Gates his farm in Georgia before that happened. What do they lie about next?"
"Third, Gates thinks that more technology is the answer to everything," the post says. "If you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. I know very well that most of the problems we have with land management today are caused by how technology is being used wrong."
Harris's fourth worry is that Gates "has a lot of money invested in protein from plants."
Harris says, "He doesn't understand that the right way animals behave is not to blame for climate change." "In fact, the right impact of animals is an important part of stopping climate change. This environmental protection can't be done again in a farm that only grows peas and soy.
"Fifth, ask the farmers of India and Africa how Gates' work helped their farming systems," he said. "If you look into the failed AGRA (Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa) programme, you can see what happens when a businessman decides how to farm. That billionaire-leopard is not going to change the spots that made him the most powerful person in the world."
The letter to Gates is at the end of the post, which has several slides.
Harris says, "If you care about the welfare of people, land, and the climate, please come to my farm and let me share what I know from my 67 years of experience. You are more than welcome to come.”
