Twitter will add gold, grey, and blue ticks under Elon Musk's plan
According to Elon Musk's most recent proposal for Twitter verification, the platform will roll out gold, grey, and blue ticks.
Elon Musk's new verification plan calls for Twitter to add gold, grey, and blue ticks.
Elon Musk, the billionaire who runs Twitter, said on Twitter that a possible new plan for user verification will be released next Friday, December 2.
After a wave of fake accounts impersonating former presidents and famous people, he stopped making money off of the "blue check," which verifies a user's identity.
Musk said on the social media site that there would be three kinds of verification ticks.
"Gold check for companies, grey check for governments, blue check for individuals (celebrities or not), and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates," he tweeted on Friday, calling the process "painful but necessary."
He also said that before getting one of these check marks, all verified accounts would be checked by hand to make sure they were real.
But it wasn't clear right away if people would have to pay for the service.
The Verge said that the price of a subscription to the "Twitter Blue" service could go up from $5 to $20 (about €5 to €20).
Musk has used Twitter to ask people what they think about company plans. For example, he has asked if Twitter should give suspended accounts a second chance if they haven't broken the law or sent a lot of spam.
As a result of the poll, which he called "Vox Populi, Vox Dei" (the voice of the people, the voice of God), he said he would start putting back controversial accounts.
Last week, former US President Donald Trump got his Twitter account back. He was accused of spreading false information about COVID-19 and was impeached for inciting a rebellion over the 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Musk has also fired a lot of people who worked for Twitter, including people who took down accounts that spread false information or incited hatred. Others have left in droves since Musk issued an ultimatum to his employees: commit to a "hardcore" new Twitter and work long, hard hours or quit.
There are rumours that Twitter's Brussels office closed this week after the last two employees left. This makes people wonder if the social media company will follow Europe's strict new rules for policing online content.
